What to Do If You’re In An Accident

Nobody plans on being in an auto accident, but it’s a good idea to prepare for the possibility. Knowing what to do after an accident can help keep you safe, as well as ensure no crucial steps are missed when it comes to filing a claim. Forgetting a step could delay the claims process, which could lead to more out-of-pocket expenses or cause you to be without a vehicle for longer than necessary.

What to Do Following an Accident
No matter what type of accident you are in, consider the following guidance on how you can respond after a crash. Please keep in mind that these are just suggestions, and should not be construed as legal or medical advice. Always follow the guidance of law enforcement and medical professionals on the scene.

  • Call the police or highway patrol to report the crash.

  • If it is safe to do so and you are not seriously injured, get out of your vehicle and try to help anyone else who may be injured.

  • If you can do so safely, move your vehicle off the road. Protect the accident scene by setting up flares or putting up cones. Keep flares, cones and other emergency items in your trunk at all times in case of an accident.

  • Take photographs and videos of your damaged vehicle and the scene, as well as any other damaged vehicles. Note the date and time.

  • Get descriptions and license plate number of all vehicles involved. Make sure to get the insurance company and vehicle identification number of everyone involved when you’re at the scene of the accident.

  • If possible, exchange contact information with the other driver(s) and get a copy of their insurance information.

  • When the police are on scene, give them as much information as you can about what happened. Do not admit fault; simply give them the facts.

  • Ask the investigating officer for a copy of the police report. You will need that for your insurance claim.

  • Call your insurance agent at JJ Insurance to report the accident and file any necessary claims.

  • Keep records of all correspondence that you have regarding your claim, including the date, name and title of the person you talked to about the accident.

  • Keep a record of any expenses you incurred as a result of the accident. Depending on your policy, you may be entitled to reimbursement for those expenses.
